In January 2017, I was asked to meet with representatives from Daniels Corporation to discuss a new initiative that they were developing. Daniels wanted to offer pre-construction wheelchair accessible condos and they were asking for my advice as a Barrier Free Real Estate Specialist with many years of experience working with people with disabilities.

To my knowledge, this was the first time in 20 years that a Greater Toronto Area builder was going to offer standardized floor plans that incorporated wheelchair accessibility features. After several months of consulting with Daniels, the initiative was launched in September 2017 and called Accessibility Designed. It’s a game changer in condo industry.

Daniels Corporation Describes the Accessibility Designed Program (ADP):
Dedicated to providing a higher standard in accessibly designed homes for people using mobility devices, Daniels ensures that the suites offered through its Accessibility Designed Program (ADP) exceed the accessibility standards set by the Ontario Building Code (OBC). Recognizing mobility needs vary among individuals, Daniels is offering a series of standard accessible layouts to choose from at no additional cost. These standard layouts include accessible features such as roll-in showers and roll-out balconies. Homebuyers can consult with Daniels to further upgrade their suites to meet their specific accessibility needs.

Purchasers will be able to choose an ADP suite in a range of designs, including one to three bedroom layouts. Where possible, ground-level ADP suites will be available, as direct exterior access is commonly preferred by mobility device users. Moving forward, the Accessibility Designed Program will be included in all Daniels’ high-rise buildings. We’re looking forward to learning how to improve our offering as this program develops.
